After Doctor Strange’s mystical adventures we return to the cosmic shenanigans of the GOTG which takes place 4 months after the first. The story does not really tie into the bigger world of the MCU in a major way but the identity of Peter’s father is revealed who turns out to be Ego the Living Planet.

In this film, they have reworked his origin story to be a multi-million-year-old Celestial who impregnated females on thousands of planets with one of them being Peter’s mother Meredith Quill from Earth. This is again an emphasis that Celestials exist in this universe and explains how Peter was able to hold on to the Power Stone in the first GOTG since mere Earthlings would be obliterated at instant contact. Ego takes a human form in the film which is a difference from the comics- he is merely a planet and not a Celestial and is, in fact, a creation of a fusion between a scientist and a planet which there is no need to divulge into. Peter’s father is also a character named J’sonn of the planet Spartax and not Ego.

For Ego to appear in this movie, a deal had to be made between Fox and Marvel Studios where Fox wanted to use Negasonic Teenage Warhead from the X-men series and change her abilities so they traded off and let Marvel use Ego.

In the end credits Ayesha, who is known as Kismet in the comics, mentions the awakening of a being named Adam. This is Adam Warlock, who in the comics is created by the Enclave, who are a group of scientists and is called Him and is meant to be a mate for Her (Kismet) who was also created by the Enclave. In the film, the Enclave is replaced by the Sovereign which is the empire we see in the film. Adam Warlock is a significant character in the comics as he becomes involved with Thanos, the Infinity Stones (notably the Soul Stone), and in the Infinity War.
