The Orange Islands- The Filler Season
Welcome back Pokefans. It’s time to talk about Season 2 of Pokemon. This is just a general overview, not emphasizing too much on the pros and cons. With only 35 episodes it is the shortest season. With that let’s get into into it.
From the beginning, the season doesn’t feel that special. The episodes don’t feel like they specially focus on Pokemon and connect them to the story or that they help move the story forward in any way. Many of them are not memorable and forgettable, not in a bad way, they just don’t stay cemented in your memory. Catching Lapras and then Snorlax were cool certainly but they didn’t feel as episodic as when Ash caught Primeape and Muk. One of the best episodes is The Crystal Onix and a memorable one following right after that is In the Pink if only because it makes you think of pink Pokemon. Bye Bye Psyduck is another one because that’s when it made everyone think that Misty’s Psyduck evolded into Golduck. Other highlights include Tracey Gets Bugged where he catches a Scyther and obviously Charizard Chills. IYKYK. The season doesn’t last very long and I completely forgot that the Orange League was just a one-on-one match between Ash and Drake albeit it was two very memorable episodes. It would be the second time we saw a Dragonite after the first movie and the fact that it use ice, electric, water, and fire attacks shows how much of a powerhouse Dragonite really is. Beating Drake and his Dragonite is a testament of how Ash has improved as trainer. The season finale is a critical episode because it gave us the first time that Gary and Ash had battled and the way they showed the lead up to their face off felt like a DBZ face off particularly when Goku and Frieza had a stare down. After Gary outmatches Ash’s Pikachu with his Eevee, Gary tells Ash about the Johto league out west and Ash makes preparations to head towards the second of 8 regions he will eventually travel.
Well folks, there you have it. Orange Islands is done lol.
