Uncanny X-Men Masterworks Vol. 3
Note: The Jean in this story is not the original Jean Grey. After a space mission in which Jean was exposed to radiation after saving the X-men and thereafter died, the original Jean was placed in a cocoon at the bed of Jamaica Bay while the Phoenix, a cosmic entity impressed with Jean’s sacrifice, created a duplicate body of Jean and became known as Phoenix-Jean and unbeknownst to the X-men that it wasn’t their Jean
X-men issues 111-121
The X-men are put under control by Mesmero as circus freaks
Beast attempts to help them but is knocked out by an unknown assailant. The liberated X-men arrive to see Beast knocked out and then watch Mesmero get knocked out
The assailant is Magneto who swears vengeance on the X-men for turning him into a baby although it was the original X-men who had a hand in that
Magneto magnetically levitates the X-men into an underground base under a volcano in Antarctica where he keeps them alive and inhibits their mutant abilities as well as their abilities to speak as payback for what happened to him
Storm helps the team escape using her thief lockpicking skills and lay a beatdown on Magneto. They inadvertently cause the base’s shield damage causing lava to fall through
Magneto saves himself and leaves the X-men to die
Jean manages to get out with Beast only who tells her the other X-men must be dead
They are in fact alive and come across the Savage Land
Jean tells Prof X about the news
The X-men encounter Sauron (2nd encounter after original X-men) who saps some of Storm and Colossus’ life force but is repelled by a team effort
The X-men confront Garrokk the sun god who wishes to establish peace and unity in the Savage Land by any means necessary. Anybody who opposes him is sentenced to death. The metropolis which he and his high priestess Zaladane built is upsetting the ecology of the Savage Land causing it to freeze
Garrokk is stopped and falls into the abyss of the deep underground after a power struggle between him and Cyclops causes the metropolis to crumble
Accepting that the X-men are dead, Jean leaves the X-mansion
Xavier reminisces about his past to Lilandra about how he and Moira were once lovers but then she broke off their engagement. He also tells her about his encounter with Amal Farouk in Cairo, a powerful, antagonistic telepath who he defeated in a psionic battle
That experience is what gave Xavier the desire for mankind and mutants to come together and live in harmony
Xavier agrees to leave Earth with Lilandra
The X-men are taken aboard by a Japanese boat which takes the team to Japan where they help Sunfire confront a man named Moses Magnum
Moses gives the PM of Japan an ultimatum to make him absolute ruler or face the destruction of Japan
Wolverine meets Mariko Yashida, Sunfire’s cousin and Wolverine’s future lover
The X-men confront Magnum at his base in the Kuril islands and stop him from creating an earthquake powerful enough to destroy Japan
Jean arrives at Muir Island to stay with Moira, Havok, Polaris, and Multiple Man
Flying from Japan, the X-men are forced to divert to Canada due to a storm
There, Alpha Flight is waiting for them where they demand Wolverine
After a scuffle, Wolverine agrees to give himself up and prepares to leave with Alpha Flight
As the X-men are escorted back to the U.S.A., Wolverine is there with them, clearly having escaped
