Agents of Shield Season 3

The third season is Inhuman-centric. This time around it intertwines Inhuman history with Hydra history. If you have read my Captain America: The First Avenger post, you will remember that I mentioned Hydra goes back thousands of years. The first followers of Hydra actually were determined in bringing an Inhuman back to Earth who was exiled through the same monolith Jemma was sucked through. This Inhuman came to be known as Hive whose true name is Alveus and fought back against his Kree masters along with other Inhumans. Eventually Hive was becoming too powerful and an alliance of Inhumans and humans sent him through the monolith to the planet Maveth which means Death.

Hive is the first Inhuman and so properly named because he changed into a parasitic being who is made up of tens of trillions of parasitic single-cell organisms who can inhabit and become host of any dead body gaining their memories, knowledge and physical skills, infect other Inhumans and affect their brains to make them happy to serve him, and feed off humans stripping them to the bone in seconds. The Hydra symbol of a skull with tentacles takes after his image.

It is not clear why men began to worship Hive and wanted him to return to Earth save they thought they would be rewarded somehow. For generations, a ritual would be done in which one man would be chosen and sacrificed to Hive, wounded prior, because Hive can smell blood. By the time WW2 came around, these rituals had become the ‘old ways’ after Red Skull cemented his incarnation of Hydra. It is never mentioned but I assume an intelligent, ambitious, and driven man like Red Skull would have known about Hive. In modern day, the 5 major heads of Hydra included Alexander Pierce, Daniel Whitehall, Baron Von Strucker, Dr. List, and Gideon Malick all who forsook the old ways and embraced or continued Red Skull’s vision of Hydra save for Malick.

Gideon Malick and his brother Nathaniel believed and carried on the tradition even after Whitehall revealed to them that their father was dishonest when the ritual was done by having a group of people stand in a circle and pass a bag full of round stones around, all black except for one white stone, and in which Malick Sr switched the regular white stone for a white stone with a groove knowing not to select that one for if one did, they’d be sent to Maveth. For years Malick Sr avoided being chosen and Gideon did the same thing resulting in Nathaniel being chosen for the sacrifice. When Gideon grew older, he used his infuence to work as an independent contractor for NASA where he had a piece of the monolith and sent a crew there for sacrifice including Jemma’s future lover Will Daniels.

Fitz and Simmons are coerced into opening the portal for Malick to retrieve Hive. Ward is unknowingly the next sacrifice for Hive which Malick had planned all along and inhabits Ward’s deceased body minutes after Coulson kills him and narrowly makes it to Earth. On the other side, Hive begins mobilizing his army including Daisy, Hellfire who lights objects up with fire, and the telekinetic Giyera. By harvesting GH-325 Kree blood from Daisy and combining Dr. Holden Radcliffe’s bio-enhancement technology with Terrigen liquid, he creates Primitive inhumans from a group of anti-Inhuman terrorists the Watchdogs, meaning he can turn any human into an Inhuman and means to transform the entire human population by releasing a warhead of the modified Terrigen onto Earth from a Quinjet in space. He is ultimately thwarted by Lincoln’s sacrifice who shorts the Quinjet out and takes the brunt of the explosion point blank along with Hive.

There is an important character who plays a significant role in Season 3. Dr Andrew Garner, a psychologist and May’s ex-husband, is an Inhuman who transforms into a monster called Lash after Terrigenesis. His primary purpose was to protect and save Daisy which he did by eradicating the parasites in her from Hive. Lash is immune to Hive’s parasites and proved his equal. He was also immune to Daisy and Lincoln’s vibration and electric attacks but not to Hellfire’s fire which killed him.

EDIT: HYDRA’S THOUSAND-YEAR HISTORY IS NO LONGER CANON AS IT SEEMS THAT THE DISNEY PLUS SHOWS CONTRADICT WHAT OCCURS IN ANY MARVEL LEGACY SERIES (see Marvel TV Shows Guide List)
