Agents of Shield Season 1
The overall arch of Season 1 sees Coulson’s team (Fitz, Simmons, Ward, Skye, May) dealing with Project Centipede-a program secretly funded and controlled by Hydra to create an army of super-soldiers injected with a fusion of gamma radiation, super-soldier serum, and Extremis (Iron Man 3). From the shadows, the mastermind is John Garrett, a Hydra agent within S.H.I.E.L.D who desires to be able to bring his soldiers back to life whenever killed.
For this he greatly covets the secret to Coulson’s revival after being impaled by Loki. The operation that brought Coulson back, known as Project T.A.H.I.T.I (Terrestrialized Alien Host Integrative Tissue I), was kept top secret known only by Fury, Coulson (who had his memories tainted to forget that he authorized it), May, Maria Hill, and a few surgeons. Garrett does not want this secret merely for just his soldiers however: suffering from deteriorating ailments, Garrett is desparate to know the secret for himself as well.
Joining Coulson on going to the Guest House, where Coulson discovers he was revived through injection with a formula known as GH-325 which is Kree blood (blue), Garrett manages to take some and has Raina synthesize it for later use. Known as the Clairvoyant throughtout the season, Garret is not directly involved with the events and instead has subordinates orchestrate his plans for him such as Raina, Ian Quinn, and Mike Peterson/Deathlok.
Garrett employs a cybernetic eye in each soldier that he has recruited by Raina and forcibly operated on by doctors to force them to be loyal to Garrett. The eye is embedded with an explosive that can be activated if the soldier turns traitor or is compromised. They are surveillanced by a camera embedded in each eye so he can see everything they see and pass them commands that appear on a virtual interface. Using the advanced-regenerative properties of GH-325, Raina perfects Garrett’s soldiers who become immune to the explosive nature of the Extremis serum.
A joint effort by a company known as Cybertek and Hydra operated Project Deathlok which turned Garrett into a cyborg who in turn did the same thing to Mike Peterson who had already joined Project Centipede under Raina’s pretense that he would be saving the world and making a difference. Although he eventually regained control of his life, Mike was not the only casualty of Garrett’s machinations. Victoria Hand, a high-ranking agent in charge of a S.H.I.E.LD command facility called The Hub, and Agent Eric Koenig (safekeeper of Fury’s top-secret safehouse Providence), met their end at the hands of Grant Ward who revealed himself to be Garrett’s protege.
In the end, a liberated Deathlok and Coulson ended Garrett’s life who began going mad seeing visions of inexplicable circles and lines. Coulson saw the same designs in his mind and like Garrett, had a compulsive desire to etch them wherever he could. The mystery to the visions and the answer to what they really are is revealed in Season 2…..
