WORST BIRTHDAY/DOBBY’S WARNING
Harry is miserable. All his school stuff is locked away. He misses Hogwarts and his friends don’t write to him
There is a creature on his bed when he has to stay in his room during a dinner party
The creature is a house-elf named Dobby. He belongs to a wizard family and has come to warn Harry not to go back to Hogwarts because there is a plot to make something bad happen there
Dobby intercepted his friends’ letters to discourage Harry from returning
Harry can’t promise Dobby about staying at Dursleys so Dobby sabotages him by using magic
Harry receives a letter from the Ministry of Magic warning him about illegal underage magic and reads it in front of the Dursleys
Harry is locked in his room with bars on his window and catflap on door for meals
Ron Weasley appears at his window one night
THE BURROW
Ron came to check on Harry because none of his letters were answered and Ron’s dad works at the Ministry of Magic where he heard about the incident
Fred, George, and Ron are in an enchanted car which their dad enchanted. It flies
Weasleys break Harry out. He tells them all about Dobby and the warning
Weasleys tell him that house-elves can’t use magic without their master’s permission so it might’ve been a joke by someone with a grudge against Harry
Harry and Ron immediately think Draco Malfoy and the twins tell him that Draco is Lucius Malfoy’s son who was a follower of Voldemort
Harry meets Mrs. Weasley again who he met at the train station last year, Mr Weasley, and sees Ginny again
FLOURISH AND BLOTTS
Ron and Harry receive letters telling them what books they’ll need for second year
Ron receives Hermione’s letter to meet at Diagon Alley
Harry travels by floo powder for the first time which is transportation through chimney grates and says diagonally instead of Diagon Alley and ends up somewhere he’s not supposed to
He’s in a shop called Borgin and Borkes where Draco and his father Lucius enter and make a business deal involving an arrangement of Borgin picking up possessions in the Malfoy household which are not Muggle-friendly since the Ministry is conducting more raids on behalf of the Muggle Protection Act created by Arthur (Mr.) Weasley as he works in the Department of of Misuse of Muggle Artifacts
Harry is in Knockturn Alley and feels nervous. He’s rescued by Hagrid and taken to Diagon Alley where he reunites with the Weasleys and Hermione
Weasleys and the trio go to Flourish and Blotts to buy their books by Gilderoy Lockhart who is there in person and announces he’ll be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher
Arthur Weasley gets into a fight with Lucius Malfoy after the latter insults the former by saying he can’t sink any lower by associating with Muggles
WHOMPING WILLOW
Harry and Ron can’t get through the barrier onto platform 9 3/4 for some reason
Ron has the idea to fly his dad’s car towards Hogwarts
The car sputters and seemingly dies just as it gets there and crashes into a tree which attacks the car as Harry and Ron are inside
The car ejects them and their luggage and disappears
Snape catches them and takes them to the dungeons and shows them a paper saying that Muggles (non-magic people) saw a flying car
Dumbledore hears their story and tells them he’ll have no choice but to expel them next time they do something like that. Mcgonagall asks why they didn’t send an owl
Mcgonagall gives them detention and then they head to their dormitory
GILDEROY LOCKHART/MUDBLOODS AND MURMURS/DEATHDAY PARTY
Ron receives a scarlet letter called a Howler from Mrs. Weasley. When he opens it her voice is heard yelling at Ron at the top of her voice scolding him for his actions. She informs Ron that his dad is facing an inquiry at work since he enchanted a Muggle vehicle
The trio learn about Mandrakes in Herbology and have to deal with Cornish pixies in DODA (Defence Against the Dark Arts). Lockhart has no idea what he is doing and asks the trio to round them up after he releases them from a cage and wreak havoc in the classroom
Draco is the new Seeker for Slytherin due to his father buying the team Nimbus 2001s
While serving detention with Lockhart for the car, Harry hears a sinister voice which wants to rip and tear and kill. Lockhart could not hear it, Ron and Harry are puzzled
After attending a deathday party for Nearless Headless Nick, the Gryffindor ghost, Harry hears the voice again
They follow it until they Mrs. Norris hanging from a torch bracket over a puddle of water and words written over the cat saying the chamber of secrets has been opened, enemies of the heir beware
Just as everyone is coming from Halloween feast, Malfoy appears and reads the words aloud and tells the Mubloods (Muggle blood mixed with magic blood) that they are next
WRITING ON THE WALL
Filch thinks his cat is dead. Mrs. Norris is stiff as a board like she’s been stuffed
Dumbledore tells him she’s been petrified and will be able to be cured through a Mandrake potion
Harry finds out Filch is a Squib, a person from a magic background who cannot perform magic and the opposite of a Mudblood, a magic person from a Muggle family
Hermione asks Professor Binns, the History of Magic teacher, about the Chamber of Secrets
He begins by saying that Hogwarts was founded 1000 years ago in the medieval age
The four founders Godric, Helga, Salazar, and Rowena until Slytherin became more selective. Only those of pure magical blood should have attended. He argued with Gryffindor and left. This is historical fact
The legend is that Slytherin built a secret chamber in Hogwarts which the others didn’t know about. Only the heir of Slytherin would be able to open it and purge the school of the unworthy
Ron suspects Malfoy is the heir after what he said
Hermione suggests using something called polyjuice potion which transforms someone into someone else to get answers from Malfoy. It will take time to gather the ingredients
ROGUE BLUDGER
Hermione borrows a book out of the Restricted Section called Most Potente potions which has instructions to make Polyjuice. It will take about a month to make and they have to steal from Snape’s cupboards
During a Quidditch match, a possessed Bludger targets Harry and breaks his elbow. Harry still catches the Snitch and Lockhart incompetently removes Harry’s bones from his arm by trying to use a charm to heal it
Harry goes to the hospital wing
Harry awakes startled to Dobby beside him and finds out it was him who put a barrier on 9 3/4 and enchanted the Bludger to stop him coming back to school
Reveals that the Chamber exists and has indeed been opened before
Colin Creevey is brought into the hospital wing and is petrified like the cat. Harry overhears Dumbledore confirm that the chamber is open again
DUELING CLUB
Harry tells Ron and Hermione about Dobby’s visit and the information he learned
They cause a diversion in potions class to steal ingredients
During a duelling club orchestrated by Lockhart. Malfoy and Harry are paired up. Malfoy uses serpentsortia to shoot a snake out
It goes after Justin Finch-Fletchley, a Hufflepuff, and Harry tells it to leave him. Justin thinks Harry is out to get him
Everyone stares at Harry suspiciously. He learns he’s a parselmouth, someone who can talk to snakes and everyone heard him speak a different language. Hermione and Ron are worried that he could be Slytherin’s descendant because that’s what he was known for and that’s why his symbol is a snake
Some Hufflepuffs have a conversation in the library about Harry which he overhears and theorize that the reason why Voldemort may have targeted him as a baby was so he wouldn’t have to compete with another dark wizard
Harry encounters a petrified Justin and Nearly Headless Nick who is black and smoky instead of white and pearly
Many students see this as well as Mcgonagall who clears the area and takes Harry to Dumbledore’s office/living space
POLYJUICE POTION
Harry enters Dumbledore’s office and puts the Sorting Hat on his head again wondering if the hat put him in the right house. The hat stands by what it said but Harry disagrees
Dumbledore does not think Harry attacked anyone and asks Harry if there’s anything to tell him. Harry thinks about Malfoy’s comment about the Mudbloods, the polyjuice, the voice, and his connection to Slytherin due to speaking parseltongue. Harry tells him no
People are panicking and wonder what could have petrified Headless Nick
The polyjuice is completed and the trio use hairs from Crabbe, Goyle, and Millicent Bullstrode and add them to their respective potions. They drink the potions. They transform but Hermione tells them she won’t be joining them. Already 5 minutes delayed, they seek a Slytherin and the entrance to the Slytherin common room in the dungeons
They encounter Malfoy and enter the common room after which Malfoy shows them a newspaper disclosing that Lucius Malfoy wants Arthur Weasley’s resignation due to his bewitched car crashing on Hogwarts grounds of which Lucius is a governor
Malfoy suspects that Dumbledore is trying to keep all the attacks hushed because the Daily Prophet hasn’t reported them and tells them that his father thinks Dumbledore is the worst thing to happen to Hogwarts for letting Mudbloods in
He reveals that people think Potter is the heir but Malfoy doesn’t believe it and wishes he knew who it was so he could help him/her
He also reveals that the chamber was opened 50 years ago and a Mudblood died and wishes it was Hermione this time
He tells them the person was caught, expelled and probably in Azkaban the wizard prison
He tells them that the Ministry conducted a raid at his house but found nothing because of the secret chamber beneath
When they return to Hermione they find she couldn’t join because she turned into a cat (she ingested cat hairs not human by mistake)
THE VERY SECRET DIARY
After a female ghost named Moaning Myrtle floods the washroom that she lives in, Harry and Ron investigate and they find a diary with the name T.M Riddle on it. Harry takes it and keeps it
He shows Hermione the diary and they are curious because Riddle attended Hogwarts 50 years ago (they know that because Ron polished a trophy with his name on it for special services) and the chamber was opened 50 years ago
They think it’s possible that he caught the person who did it but Ron shuts the theory down because there is nothing written in it
For some reason, Harry cannot get rid of it and keeps opening it
Harry receives a Valentine from Ginny Weasley
Harry discovers that any ink dropped onto the diary disappears and writes his name in it
The diary answers back in ink and it is Tom Riddle himself who preserved his memories in it
They discuss about the Chamber of Secrets and Riddle tells Harry that one student died, the perpetrator was caught and was expelled but not imprisoned and the monster still lives
Harry is pulled inside the diary by magic and taken back 50 years into Riddle’s memories
Harry discovers that it was Hagrid who opened the chamber and some sort of creature with many legs was responsible for the student’s death
CORNELIUS FUDGE
Riddle’s diary is stolen from Harry’s things
While Hermione was heading to the library because she figured something out, she is petrified by the monster and put in the hospital wing
Mcgonagall addresses the Gryffindors and tells them it’s likely the school will be closed if the culprit isn’t caught
Harry knows how Riddle felt to turn Hagrid in for letting the creature loose because Riddle did not want to return to the orphanage nor does Harry wish to return to the Dursleys
They go see Hagrid to see if he may know something but are interrupted by the arrival of Dumbledore, the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge, and Lucius Malfoy
Fudge is there to take Hagrid to Azkaban prison as his record is against him
Malfoy tells Dumbledore that all 12 governors have signed to suspend him because they don’t feel he’s doing job as headmaster and protecting the students
After Hagrid and Dumbledore leave, Hagrid leaves a cryptic hint to “follow the spiders”
ARAGOG
Ron and Harry grab the invisibility cloak and sneak out after midnight
They follow the spiders into the Forbidden Forest
They stumble upon Mr.Weasley’s enchanted car
They are taken by spiders to a large one as big as a small elephant named Aragog who talks to them. Harry tells him Hagrid has been taken to Azkaban for letting something loose at Hogwarts
Aragog tells him they already mistakenly caught him for that because everyone thought he (Aragog) was the monster from the chamber. He confirms to Harry that he is not
Aragog tells him it was a girl who was murdered and whose body was found in a bathroom. The spiders fear the monster. Aragog admits he never killed a soul
Just as Aragog is about to feed Harry and Ron to his children, the car saves them and gets them out of the forest
They learn Hagrid was and is innocent but then also come to a revelation that the girl who died may be Moaning Myrtle
CHAMBER OF SECRETS
While visiting Hermione in the hospital ward they notice a scrunched piece of paper in her hand. It’s a page from a library book with information about the Basilisk, the king of serpents which can kill people instantly with a stare and travels through pipes
Harry realizes he heard it because of parseltongue
Many of Hagrid’s roosters had been found dead because the crow of the rooster is fatal to it and spiders are afraid of it just like Aragog had said
Harry surmises there must be another parseltongue in the school to be controlling the snake
While in the staff room, Harry and Ron hide as they overhear Mcgonagall say that Ginny Weasley has been taken into the chamber and there is a message of blood on the wall proclaiming that her skeleton will lie in the chamber forever
The teachers tell Lockhart this is his chance to prove himself and that he should take the monster on. Mcgonagall tells the teachers to send the students home
As Ron and Harry head to Lockhart’s office to tell him what they know, they see that he’s packing
They find out he’s a fraud and has been taking credit for what other wizards and witches have done. He wiped their memories using a Memory Charm
Harry and Ron force Lockhart to go with them. They go to Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom and ask her how she died. She confirms it was instant and that she a pair of yellow eyes
They inspect the area where Myrtle saw the eyes and find a small snake engraving on some pipes under a sink. Harry speaks parseltongue and the sink lowers to reveal a larger pipe
They all jump down and land in a series of tunnels. Lockhart attempts to mind wipe Harry and Ron but the spell backfires and causes a rockblock. Harry goes on alone
He reaches a door with two snakes on it and tells it to open after which he walks through
HEIR OF SLYTHERIN
Harry finds Ginny lying unconscious
Mysteriously, Tom Riddle is also there. A memory of him
Riddle tells him that she is unconscious after pouring her secrets into the diary and confiding to Riddle
Through dark magic, Riddle’s memory was able to feed off Ginny’s negative emotions such as fear and grow powerful enough to possess Ginny to open the chamber of secrets
Riddle tells Harry he’s glad that Harry coincidentally picked up the diary because he wanted to meet him and that he framed Hagrid as the culprit 50 years ago
Dumbledore convinced Headmaster Armando Dippet to keep Hagrid as gameskeeper
Riddle confesses to Harry that petrified mudbloods were just sport and the real target was Harry
Riddle deliberately attacked Hermione knowing it would attract Harry’s attention and knew Harry spoke parselmouth from Ginny telling him
She is on the verge of death from the life force that’s been taken and put into the diary
Riddle reveals that he is Voldemort
Fawkes arrives and brings Harry the Sorting Hat for some reason
Riddle unleashes the Basilisk
Fawkes blinds the Basilisk by tearing its eyes
As Harry puts on the hat something heavy hits his head which turns out to be a sword
As the Basilisk lunges at Harry, he stabs it at the roof of its mouth but is stabbed by one of its venomous fangs
Fawkes heals Harry’s wound with his tears. He brings Riddle’s diary to him
Harry stabs the diary with the fang and Riddle is destroyed
Ginny regains consciousness
Fawkes lifts everyone back up to the school
DOBBY’S REWARD
In Mcgonagall’s office, Harry and Ron tell her and Dumbledore everything as Mr. and Mrs. Weasley embrace Ginny
Ginny is not punished because Dumbledore knows it was Voldemort who bewitched her
Harry and Ron receive special services to the school instead of being expelled for breaking school rules
Dumbledore theorizes that Harry can speak parselmouth because Voldemort transferred his powers to Harry unintentionally the night he tried to kill him
Dumbledore reveals that only a true Gryffindor could have used Gryffindor’s sword after Harry has doubts that perhaps he should’ve been in Slytherin like the hat told him
Lucius Malfoy appears and is furious that Dumbledore is back. Dumbledore tells him the other governors were under the impression that Malfoy would threaten their families if they didn’t comply and wanted Dumbledore back immediately after they heard that Ginny was “dead”
Harry confronts Lucius about slipping the diary into Ginny’s books at Flourish and Blotts
Harry gives the diary back to Malfoy with a sock which frees Dobby because clothes free house-elves. Lucius is furious but Dobby prevents him from attacking Harry
After the Hogwarts end-of-term feast, everyone goes home in joyous spirits
