Professor X is introduced as are his first 4 X-Men members: Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, and Beast. Vol. 1 contains X-Men issues 1-10

They work on their skills in the Danger Room in Charles Xavier’s mansion known as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters- a school for the gifted acting as cover for mutants

They welcome the 5th member: Jean Grey aka Marvel Girl

A sinister mutant named Magneto who has a grudge against homo sapiens takes control of Cape Citadel (space station)

He is defeated by the X-Men and flees 

They deal with a character named The Vanisher. Being able to teleport out of reach, the only way he is defeated us by Xavier making him forget who he is

The X-Men make an enemy of The Blob

We meet Magneto’s Brotherhood of Mutants, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who are indebted to him for saving their lives, Toad, and Mastermind

Xavier and Magneto communicate on the astral plane and discuss their difference of opinions: the former; that mutants should defend mankind. The latter; that humans should be slaves to homo superior

Magneto and the Brotherhood abduct Angel and take him to Asteroid M: Magneto’s new base 

Asteroid M is destroyed as the X-Men land on Earth safely and the Brotherhood and Magneto land elsewhere 

Magneto attempts to recruit Namor the Sub-Mariner into the Brotherhood and fails

Xavier invents and constructs Cerebro- a machine designed to utilize his mental powers to recognize and locate mental mutant signatures

Cyclop is made group leader

After temporarily recruiting Blob into the Brotherhood and realizing that Magneto doesn’t care about his cohorts, he leaves

Professor X leaves to search for a being named Lucifer hiding in a cave in the Balkans

Lucifer is the one responsible for making Xavier a handicap

Lucifer has a bomb rigged to blow if his heart stops beating. Xavier tells the X-Men not to engage him. Meanwhile they have to prevent the Avengers from doing so since Thor’s hammer detected wavelengths from the bomb

After scuffling, the coming to an understanding, Xavier renders Lucifer unconscious so Cyclops can detonate the bomb safely

Xavier allows Lucifer to leave so they can settle their score another time

The X-Men meet Ka-Zar and Zabu in the so-called ‘savage land’- a tropical part of Antarctica frozen in time full of prehistoric creatures
