Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix

  • Note: This is the true Jean who in the interim of Dark Phoenix Saga and this story, was rejuvenated from the healing cocoon, supplanted her clone Madelyne Pryor, and married Cyclops

  • Jean and Cyclops find themselves in the far future suddenly. It is the first day of their honeymoon

  • In order to understand the context of what is occurring, some background history must be covered

  • As we know, Rachel Summers is from the Days of Future Past timeline and is the biological daughter of Cyclops and Jean Grey

  • After having spent time in the past (present Earth 616) Rachel returned to the future to about 4000 A.D in a world ruled by Apocalypse and founded a clan of warriors known as the Askani clan

  • In present Earth 616, Apocalypse had been awakened in the year 1997 after 100 years of hibernation by the future time-traveling mutant Cable

  • A few months later Apocalypse learns Mr. Sinister is planning to create an enemy powerful enough to take him down: Nathan Christopher Summers aka Cable. Realizing it is the same energy that awoke him, Apocalypse infects him with the Techno-Organic virus

  • Rachel, after having spent decades in the future and now known as the elderly Mother Askani, has one of her followers bring Nathan to the future and have him cloned in case he’s not able to survive the virus

  • The Apocalypse of that time plans to transfer his powers and consciousness into Cable

  • Scott and Jean, going under the aliases Red and Slymm, save Mother Askani when they realize it is Rachel. She reveals that with the combined power of a fully healthy Nathan and herself they could’ve stopped Apocalypse but that is no longer possible so she had Cyclops and Jean brought here

  • They are in different bodies as genetically similar as their originals otherwise they would not have survived the time warp

  • Rachel collapses into a coma in Jean’s arms. Before she died, she told Scott and Jean that Cable is safe, taken by an Askani synthcon. Unfortunately, Apocalypse’s men have taken Nathan from it and offer an exchange- Rachel for Nathan

  • Scott and Jean give them the slip and manage to grab Nathan, revealing they are mutants. Chavy’re, leader of Apocalypse’s minions vows to find them

  • Cyclops and Jean have been nomads for 8 years, raising Nathan who is destined to take down Apocalypse in this timeline

  • They are making their way to the Citadel of Coastcrest

  • 482 km to the south is the House of Apocalypse where Stryfe (Nathan’s clone), is being raised by Apocalypse who is completely unaware it is not Nathan, his truly intended vessel

  • Slymm and Red make it to the entrance of the Citadel where they meet resistance from mutant guards. They make it through by the grace of a being named Prior Turrin

  • Jean trains Nathan how to use his psychic abilities

  • Chavy’re learns that Stryfe is not the boy Apocalypse needs when Apocalypse tells him that the child he THINKS he has was infected with the T.O virus which Stryfe exhibits no symptoms of

  • For 1900 years since the beginning of the 21st century the world was at peace until Apocalypse conquered the world in the most recent 100

  • Slymm, Redd, Turrin and others set out on a mission to a complex where a synthcon named Gyak hacks into the computer and finds an operation that will release an airborne virus that will decompose human DNA

  • Cyclops recognizes it as the Legacy Virus which Stryfe developed

  • The group is attacked by Stryfe and Chavy’re and other cronies. Slymm and Redd oust themselves as mutants to their companions. Stryfe and Cable encounter each other

  • They escape by self-destructing the complex- it was in actuality, Nathan, who was telepathically instructed by a comatose Rachel

  • After the T.O virus has been in remission for so long, it finally catches up to Nathan at 11 years old as it overtakes his body and begins transforming him into a mechanical monstrosity

  • After slipping into a coma, Rachel speaks with Nathan on an astral plane and convinces him that he’s powerful enough to contain the virus with his psychic powers. He wakes from his coma and embraces Cyclops

  • All in the meantime, Apocalypse is preparing to inhabit Stryfe’s body as Jean and Turrin prepare a sneak attack. Chavy’re surprisingly wishes to aid them in stopping Apocalypse

  • As Apocalypse prepares to inhabit Stryfe’s body, he realizes it is a clone and doesn’t have the capacity to withhold Apocalypse’s essence

  • Cyclops, Nathan, Chavy’re, and Jean stop Apocalypse’s transplant and defeat him in that timeline

  • After Cyclops and Jean’s purpose in the future is fulfilled, they are pulled back into the past and phase away but not before Nathan says an emotional goodbye to his parents

  • In a short interluding story, on a Valentine’s Day not specified but certainly after Jean’s time in the future, she opens a gift in the shape of a cactus of which Jubilee is perplexed but Jean completely understands
